President Donald Trump confirmed Tuesday morning that he is replacing his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson by current CIA Director Mike Pompeo. The latter will be replaced by one of his assistants, Gina Haspel.

“Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. It will do a fantastic job, “Trump wrote on Twitter. “Thanks to Rex Tillerson for his services. Gina Haspel will become the new director of the CIA, and the first woman to do so. Congratulations to all. ”

The State Department announced on Monday that Tillerson was spending time in Africa. An undersecretary of state then explained that he was returning to the United States a day earlier than planned because of “the demands of his job” and for “face-to-face meetings” in Washington.

Last week, Mr. Tillerson found himself in the hot seat after declaring that the United States was ” still far from negotiations ” with Pyongyang; a few hours later, Mr. Trump agreed to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

According to White House sources cited by The Washington Post and the Associated Press, Trump would have liked to put a new team in place for these unexpected talks with Kim and for trade negotiations.

More details to come.
